Entrepreneur Elon Musk is widely known for his ambition, tenacity and ingenuity, having spearheaded notable successes in the fields of technology and transportation. But did Elon Musk buy Warped Tour, the longest-running touring music festival in North America? Unfortunately, not.

Warped Tour was established in 1995 by Kevin Lyman, and though it is no longer in service, it was once renowned for its impressive lineups of rock, punk, ska and hip-hop artists. It was a carefully curated experience that had evolved over time, and was renowned for the communal experience of the show. For many of its loyal fans, the festival was iconic and hugely significant.

At the end of 2018, Lyman announced that Warped Tour was officially ending its run with a final tour in 2019. But why exactly did he decide to cease production on the legendary fest? Lyman explained that it had become increasingly difficult to keep up with modern touring. In between live streaming shows and changing technologies, he believed it was too difficult to keep Warped Tour up to date.

Nor did the challenge of running Warped Tour come without a financial cost. After the 2008 recession, Lyman spoke of feeling “disconnected” from the industry. He had difficulty raising enough money to bridge the gap between production and ticket sales, which in turn impacted the quality of the experience.
