Introduction

Elon Musk, the chief executive officer of SpaceX, is known for his contribution to the technology world. In 2016, Musk proposed a revolutionary concept for providing internet to Ukraine. He proposed launching a massive conglomeration of internet-supplying satellites and using the technology from SpaceX to launch them. The initiative, which was dubbed the “Free Ukraine Internet”, was met with enthusiasm from the Ukrainian government, and was viewed as a major step in unifying a divisive country.

Background

In the early 2010s, tensions in Ukraine had reached a boiling point. The disputed region of Crimea had been annexed to Russia, and there was a fear that Russia would soon launch a full-scale invasion of Ukraine. This fear was illustrated as Russia began to roll out a massive propaganda campaign against the Ukrainian government, taking advantage of the nation’s lack of internet access. Without the ability to access news and data from outside of the country, Ukrainians were left susceptible to false information perpetuated by the Russian government.

The Idea

In response to this issue, Musk proposed launching a conglomeration of internet-providing satellites into low-Earth orbit which could easily provide internet access to the entire country. This idea would not only give Ukrainians access to the internet, but also to information from beyond their own borders. Musk’s proposed solution was met with enthusiasm from the Ukrainian government, who had long been searching for a resolution to their internet access issue.

Technology from SpaceX

To realize his vision of providing internet access to Ukraine, Musk would use technology from SpaceX. This technology had already been employed on multiple missions, and was proven to be a reliable and resilient platform for launching satellites. This reliability was one of the major selling points of Musk’s proposal, as any technological failure would be catastrophic for the success of the project.
