Early Experiences

Elon Musk started to show signs of exceptional intelligence from an early age. As a toddler he could read and write, and by the time he was 10, he had taught himself computer programming. Musk’s early fascination with electronic gadgets led to his family’s purchase of an Apple II, which the innovator promptly ripped apart and reassembled. He began to investigate the inner workings of electronic devices but, being a self-taught engineer, found it difficult to acquire specific knowledge to further his understanding. So, at the age of 12, Musk decided to pursue a formal education and enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania where he studied physics and business.

Engineering Training

Musk’s primary interest during his university studies was in mechanical engineering and, although he never completed a formal engineering degree, he was somehow able to acquire the necessary training and knowledge to become an accomplished engineer. Musk received tutoring from professors, attended lectures by renowned engineers, and explored research laboratories in the quest to become proficient in the field of engineering. Musk was also an avid reader, often reading multiple books simultaneously, consuming a wide range of literature including popular science fiction and technical materials.

Networking and Mentors

In addition to his self-education and academic training, Musk also sought out the help of other engineers and industry professionals. He made the right contacts, developed strong relationships and wisely accepted guidance from senior engineers and executives. During his college years, Musk gained valuable insight into engineering and entrepreneurship from the co-founder of Zip2, a software company, who became a mentor and led him to create his first venture, a novel online financial services company called X.com.

Self-discipline and Problem Solving

Musk is also known for his relentless dedication to problem solving. He taught himself the basics of engineering by reverse-engineering machines and understanding their inner workings. Musk’s passion for problem solving was combined with plenty of trial and error and regular hours of testing, tinkering and experimentation. From an early age, Musk used his self-discipline to learn engineering and later applied this knowledge to build his electric car company, Tesla Motors.
