The Early Life Of Elon Musk

Born and raised in South Africa, Elon Reeve Musk is an engineer and technology entrepreneur who, as of 2020, is the wealthiest person in the world. Growing up in Pretoria, Musk became fascinated with computer programming at a very early age and by his teenage years was already experimenting with electronic parts and making his own PCs. It was during this period of his life that he first began to question and challenge the societal conventions of his time, and developed the ambition to pursue an innovative entrepreneurial career.

Musk created and sold his first computer game successfully at the age of 12, and then went on to attend the University of Pennsylvania to study physics and economics. It was here that Musk’s inclination towards business and technology became stronger, and while still at school he began investing in start-up companies, before finally joining his college buddy’s “Zip2” software venture. After Zip2 was sold to Compaq, Musk became well recognized in the industry, earning him a place on an iconic “who’s who of the tech world” list published by the San Jose Mercury News.

Musk’s Involvement With Twitter

Musk’s involvement with Twitter began in 2009 when he used it to promote his other venture, Tesla Motors. Initially, Musk mainly used Twitter as a promotional tool to get the word out about Tesla, though he was cautious and deliberate in using the social media platform. Over time, he became more outspoken about his views and ideas, notably about technological breakthroughs, sustainability, and political stances.

In 2013, Musk’s discussion on Twitter went further as he and several friends pooled together to buy a controlling stake in the platform. This was mainly done to secure the platform’s future and give it greater capital in order to grow, as well as to protect the interests of those invested in the company, namely Musk and his friends.
