Amber Heard and Elon Musk’s embryonic situation has the world talking, as the dynamic couple’s apparent attempts to create and share embryos has whirlwinded into several weeks of speculation. It all started in February 2018 when Amber Heard posted an Instagram story from a plane, which led to the launch of an online controversy regarding their possible involvement with embryonic issues. From this Instagram post details of the couple’s actions have slowly emerged as the story unravels. But did Amber Heard and Elon Musk really make embryos, and if so, why?

The Instagram post which began the speculation depicted Amber Heard in a plane, but only fragments of what was heard in the post have been made available. Multiple sources indicate that Elon Musk’s voice was heard claiming the possibility of making a baby with Heard on the plane during the earlier post. This speculation was further fueled when Amber uploaded a post which elicited a response from Musk in which he wrote: “Off I gallop” in an obvious nod to the widely shared scene from the hit movie ‘The Departed’.

It is not known at this point exactly why Musk and Heard would have considered making embryos or if they actually did so, but some experts suggest it could have stemmed from an effort to increase their fertility. The idea of “making” or “creating” embryos for various reasons has been around for centuries, but the science behind making embryos today is much more advanced than in the past. Embryo ‘making’ is performed in fertility clinics and involves the retrieval of eggs and sperm from both a male and female partner, which are then combined in a laboratory to form an embryo. This embryo is then implanted in the female partner, and after a period of nine months a baby is born.

The more pressing question is whether Amber Heard and Elon Musk attempted to make embryos without going through the complex process of a fertility clinic. If so, it is possible they used at-home methods such as storing eggs and sperm and manually combining them outside of a clinic, but this is very difficult to do. While Heard and Musk may have attempted it, it is unlikely they would have been successful.
