Over the years, Elon Musk has been lauded as a brilliant inventor and innovative entrepreneur. However, allegations of racism have plagued the South African native, calling into question his commitment to civil rights and equality. Despite his success, reports of Musk displaying overtly racist behavior towards minorities has sparked a nationwide debate about the consequences of racism and the responsibility of having such a sensational global presence.

In 2020, an audio recording surfaced of Musk speaking derogatorily about a British rescue diver in Thailand, calling him a “pedo guy”. The diver, Vern Unsworth, had rescued a soccer team that was trapped in a cave, but was then criticized by Musk for his involvement. The diver later sued Musk and accused him of using the slur to impugn his character. As the case proceeds, many are wondering if this incident displays a pattern of racism on Musk’s part, or if the claims are unfounded.

The incident was the most glaring example of Musk’s tendency to criticize the backgrounds and beliefs of those he disagrees with. In 2018, Musk referred to a critic as “Dude, you are a nobody,” and in another instance said “go dig a hole in the desert and bury yourself.” There have been similar incidents throughout his career, which have raised questions about the Silicon Valley CEO’s respect for personal autonomy and free speech.

Reginald Clyne, a professor of political science who specializes in race relations, notes that it is difficult to ascertain whether or not Musk is a racist. According to Clyne, there are certain indicators that someone may hold underlying racist beliefs, including his tendency to target minorities, alienate them from society, or call into question their loyalty and commitment to society’s values. However, Clyne also notes, “It is likely that all people, at some point in their lives, have implicit biases that, when combined with power and privilege, can lead to actions that can be seen as discriminatory.”
