It seems like each day there is another headline about Mark Zuckerberg and his involvement with Facebook but this time, it’s more than just Facebook: it’s all about his character. At the helm of a multi-billion dollar company and with influence over billions of Facebook users, one can’t help but ask: is Mark Zuckerberg a ‘dick’, or just highly misunderstood? The answer, of course, is likely somewhere in the middle.

Facebook’s meteoric rise to success over the past decade has prompted discussions of the morality and ethical implications of the corporate giant, with numerous reports claiming Zuckerberg is out of touch and connoting that he may be an even bigger “dick” than most privileged figures in power and of wealth. Zuckerberg has been criticized for refusing to deal with certain challenging and complex issues, such as preventing fake news, allowing oppressive regimes to use the platform, and data breaches in the past, but it’s worth noting that many of the world’s most difficult crises aren’t easily solved. In fact, Zuckerberg may not be as heartless as he is perceived – in 2015, he and his wife pledged 99% of their Facebook shares to the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative, a philanthropic foundation which seeks to improve access to quality education throughout the world.

Furthermore, Zuckerberg’s personal tonality and approach to controversy has been labeled as cold, icy, and distant. After the Facebook data breach scandal in early 2018, for instance, it took him weeks before he showed any emotional presence and expressed sympathy for the millions of users whose data was leaked, in what may have been frustration from the public. But given that Zuckerberg has no formal training in crisis management, such an issue was personally difficult for him to address, and as such, might be a sign of social and emotional intelligence rather than of a ‘dick’.

It’s also important to note the kind of person Zuckerberg is when the cameras are not rolling, and witness his conduct during company meetings or press conferences. Despite the wealth and admiration that comes with succeeding, Zuckerberg’s executive style remains free of dogma and flexible enough to embrace changes as they arise. His decisions are well-reasoned and fair-minded – he abstains from making decisions when he is unwell, tired, or just plain fed up, even during times of crunch when deadlines loom large. This kind of decision-making process involves patience and maturity, and if anything, signals those of a capable leader.
