Early Beginnings

Mark Zuckerberg started ‘Thefacebook’ in his dorm room at Harvard in 2004. When Zuckerberg was a sophomore at the college, he launched the social networking site in order to keep his classmates connected. It first started as a way for Harvard students to share pictures and connect with their friends, but this quickly grew beyond the Harvard community. By November 2005, the site had spread to college campuses across the nation and in 2006, the site opened to anyone over the age of 13 with a valid e-mail address. The site officially changed its name to ‘Facebook’ in August 2005. Zuckerberg and some of his associates ran the company out of a rented house in Palo Alto, California until it was purchased by Microsoft in April 2007 for $240 million dollars.

Facebook has grown from a small networking website to one of the largest and most influential digital companies in the world. By the end of 2012, the total number of Facebook users had reached 1.06 billion people. Moreover, approximately 604 million people were using the website on a daily basis and 346 million of them were accessing the website through mobile phones, tablets, and other devices. This skyrocketed Facebook’s value to more than $100 billion. With Zuckerberg at the helm, the company has experienced a tremendous amount of success and it continues to grow at an unprecedented rate.

Business Model and Features

The website’s business model involves selling targeted advertisements, supported by data collected on its users. This data is used to create user profiles, which then allow companies to market directly to individuals based on their interests, hobbies, etc. Additionally, Facebook offers additional features, such as games, apps, live streaming, photo editing, virtual reality experiences, and so much more. The site is constantly evolving as Zuckerberg and his team of engineers add new features and tools to the website.

Facebook has become a powerful platform for individuals, businesses, organizations, and governments to share their insights, connect with their audiences, and make meaningful changes to the world around them. Additionally, the website has provided a tremendous amount of value for its users, allowing them to keep in touch with friends and family, share their thoughts and emotions, and discover new things.
