Early life

Mark Zuckerberg was born to a Jewish family in White Plains, New York. His father, Edward Zuckerberg, was a dentist, and his mother, Karen, was a psychiatrist. Mark was taken to the Howard Yacht Club at an early age and took a particular interest in computers, programming and mathematics. In middle school, Zuckerberg created an electronic version of the board game Risk. He eventually entered a programming competition, which he won. At Phillips Exeter Academy, he excelled in classical studies such as Latin and Greek, and was part of the school’s fencing team.

Facebook Start-up

In 2004, during his sophomore year at Harvard, Zuckerberg co-founded TheFacebook with Andrew McCollum, Chris Hughes, Dustin Moskovitz and Eduardo Saverin. The site was initially intended as a social networking site for Harvard students. He continued to add more schools to the site, and within a few months, more than half of the student body at Harvard had signed up for the site. In March 2005, Zuckerberg launched TheFacebook at a few other universities in the United States, and it went on to acquire millions of users.

Success and Controversy

In 2006, Zuckerberg dropped out of Harvard in his junior year to focus on his company and moved to Silicon Valley. By 2009, Facebook had made enough money to pay off its debts and make Zuckerberg a billionaire. Facebook was already being sued by former classmates, brothers Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss and Divya Narendra, who claimed that Zuckerberg had stolen their idea. Zuckerberg ended up settling the case with the trio. In 2010, Zuckerberg was voted the most influential person on the web by Time magazine.
