From humble beginnings at Harvard, Mark Zuckerberg went on to become a tech celebrity – one of the most successful and influential figures in Silicon Valley. But did he finish his studies? The answer is a bit complicated.

When Zuckerberg arrived in Harvard in 2002, he intended to major in mathematics and computer science. But this plan didn’t last long. Within a few months, Zuckerberg had already developed a social networking service called Facemash. This attracted the attention of students, leading him to co-found the Facebook group.

The success of Facebook meant that Zuckerberg had to focus his attention away from his studies. As a result, he left Harvard without completing his degree. Despite this, Zuckerberg was awarded an honorary doctorate from Harvard in 2017. In his speech, he acknowledged dropping out and expressed his appreciation for the recognition.

Experts have since weighed in on the matter. Juan Yan, a computer science professor from the University of California, argues that Zuckerberg is an excellent example of how it is sometimes important to abandon traditional paths. According to him, many of today’s most successful entrepreneurs do not have college degrees. Instead, they often use their own brilliance and determination to achieve success.
