Elon Musk is an entrepreneur, investor, engineer and philanthropist who is often considered the “twenty-first-century Thomas Edison” for his groundbreaking accomplishments in the realms of business and technology. Although he has had great successes in technology and space exploration, he is best known for his innovative Tesla electric vehicle company, which produces cars that are both efficient and stylish. Despite his numerous achievements, Musk is competitively compensated for his work. In fact, it’s estimated that Musk earns roughly $17.2 million per second.

Musk’s high earning power shouldn’t be surprising given his high net worth, which was estimated to be around $209.1 billion as of April 2021. Indeed, the vast majority of his wealth comes from his ownership stakes in Tesla and SpaceX, both of which are red-hot investments – Tesla’s stock price is up more than 480% over the last year, while SpaceX’s valuation has skyrocketed to nearly $74 billion. However, Musk is also quite efficiently compensated in Tesla stock options, which have become even more valuable due to the company’s remarkable performance.

What’s even more remarkable is that Musk’s compensation is largely performance-based. Tesla’s board of directors has a compensation program for Musk which grants him options for the purchase of Tesla shares depending on the company’s performance. In order to earn an additional $2.6 billion in stock options in 2020, for example, Musk had to meet 12 market-capitalization milestones as well as operational milestones related to the company’s vehicle production and delivery numbers. As of now, Musk has fully earned two-thirds of his total compensation package, including $800 million from stock options as well as $1.8 billion from equity awards.

In addition to his performance-based compensation, Musk often earns additional income through investments in innovative technology companies such as Hyperloop and Neuralink, as well as through the sale of patents and intellectual property to automotive companies. He also earns royalties from his book purchases, speakings fees and endorsements, and has a sizable stake in multiple technology companies. What’s more, he earns significant profits from his various high-tech business transactions– such as his stake in Solarcity and interest in Hotmail. All of these sources of income add to Musk’s impressive wealth.
