When discussing the racial identity of controversial entrepreneur, engineer, inventor and business magnate Elon Musk, most people’s first response is surprise – shock that a man whose mother is a Canadian and father a South African would be considered Caucasian. It is well-known that Musk has world-wide influence, but not many are aware of the implications his race holds and how that might explain why he is seen differently from other billionaires. It is important to understand how society views the racial identity of individuals in order to better comprehend the nuances behind Elon Musk’s success.

From a sociological standpoint, it is important to consider the cultural implications of one’s race. Most would agree that Musk’s identity as a Caucasian has likely allowed him access to social structure and resources, which have helped him to achieve his current level of success and recognition. In fact, research done by the sociologist William Julius Wilson and social psychologist Travell Mizoroki has found that the accumulation of resources and networks often comes hand-in-hand with one’s racial identity. Therefore, it is likely that these resources and networks have contributed to Musk’s level of success.

It could also be argued that the preconceptions that society has assigned to Caucasians, such as intelligence and innovation, have directly contributed to Musk’s success as well. Through these stereotypes, Musk’s race has potentially allowed him to receive more success and recognition than he might have otherwise received had he been perceived as a different race.

Additionally, due to the privileges afforded to him as a Caucasian, Musk has been exempt from certain economic and social issues that other races face more frequently, such as discrimination, racial profiling, and a lack of equal opportunities. Through this privilege, he has been able to access environments, resources and experiences that have likely given him an edge in understanding how our modern world works.
