Elon Musk is no stranger to ambitious projects and bold investments – yet taking a trip to space has been one of his most unique undertakings to date. The SpaceX founder has long championed the idea of making space exploration more accessible for the average person, but his recent journey to orbit challenged this very idea by demonstrating that space travel is still reserved for those with deep pockets. So, how much did Elon Musk spend to go to space? Let’s investigate.

As expected, Musk’s mission was no small feat. In March 2021, he became the first “space tourist” to visit the International Space Station (ISS), many have speculated that the trip cost Musk in the tens of millions – with some estimates putting it at over $100 million.

Although Musk’s mission was predominantly bankrolled by himself, the cost was shared with the Russian federal space agency, Roscosmos. The expedition was cosponsored by Axiom Space, a private company which provides commercial ISS flights. Axiom itself was the sole contractor for the mission and arranged for Musk’s transport to and from the ISS.

The cost of Musk’s mission breaks down into two main components: the preparation phase and the trip itself. The preparation phase included installing necessary safety protocols and developing the SpaceX Crew Dragon capsule – this process took over three years. In addition to this expenditure, it’s also said that Musk financed the development of the suits he wore on board, as well as the food he took with him.
