Elon Musk is a business magnate, who grew up in Pretoria, South Africa. Musk is an accomplished entrepreneur and an icon in the technology and engineering world. After achieving much success in business ventures in Silicon Valley, Musk decided to move to Texas. Specifically, in the small city of Austin, Texas.

Musk’s grandparents, Joshua Haldeman and Maye Musk, were prominent in the early development of Pretoria, South Africa. His mother was born in Regina, and his father, Errol Musk, is an engineer and a South African. While Musk was attending school in Canada, his parents decided to leave South Africa and move to Austin, Texas.

At 30 years old, and having achieved much success on several business ventures in Silicon Valley, Musk journeyed to Texas looking for a place to relocate his family. He was drawn to Austin to be closer to his parents.

Although Austin is a much different city than California, Musk was intrigued. The cooler climate and expansive landscapes quickly drew Musk to the city. He also felt a strong connection to the city’s music tastes, as Austin is dubbed “The Live Music Capital of the World”.

While Musk has a keen eye for business opportunities, it was clear that his move to Texas was far from random. He sought a new location to settle down and raise a family. He found that in the left-leaning city of Austin. Shortly after moving to Austin, Musk bought a five-bedroom estate.

Musk is a forward-thinking individual and a practicing minimalist, so it’s no surprise that he was attracted to Austin’s eco-friendliness and young creative minds. He was drawn to the city’s tech community and startups, as well as the notable college scene. Elon Musk’s move to Austin was not made rashly. He carefully considered this move, ultimately settling on Austin as his new home.

When Musk first made his move to Texas, he was preparing to build the world’s largest Tesla factory which will produce the company’s next generation of electric vehicles. Since its commencement in 2020, the factory has been in the process of construction in Austin.

The Tesla factory is being built on 2,100 acres of land bought by the company as well as three additional sites leased by Tesla. When the project is said and done, the factory will be approximately five times the size of the Apple campus in Cupertino, California.

When asked about the project in an interview, Musk said, “This is going to be an incredibly amazing facility… and we’re going to make the fastest, safest and most efficient cars in the world. This is going to be a really great showcase of what we can do in Texas.”

It’s without a doubt that the move to Austin was a great advantage for Musk’s success. But one other impact of the move was the effect it had on lesser-known businesses in Austin. In particular, the those in the beauty and tech industry that tend to be musket by bigger companies.

Though Musk isn’t the only business magnate to settle in Austin, many businesses have had to raise their prices to offset competition from larger corporations. For example, in the early stages of construction for the Tesla factory, some barbershops and salons had to raise their prices by nearly 50% in order to survive. Many local businesses are still struggling to survive due to the influx of competition.

Elon Musk’s move to Austin has not been completely smooth sailing for the city. Although it has created jobs and new opportunities, locals are having to adjust to a much different housing and rental market. With the rise of new tech in the area, the cost of living has skyrocketed as well. Austin’s rent prices rose over 7% in 2020 alone.

The small city of Austin has gone through a massive transformation since Musk’s move. Even with the influx of companies and businesses, Austin remains a vibrant and dynamic city.

Since Musk’s arrival, the city of Austin has become a hotbed for technological advancements and economic growth. Tesla has already announced plans to hire up to 5,000 employees for the Austin plant alone. This means that the local economy will see some major benefits, as the influx of employees will increase demand for goods and services.

In addition to this, it is predicted that Tesla’s presence in Austin will bring in billions of dollars in taxes to the state of Texas. This money can be used to improve the local infrastructure and other projects around the city. This will help bring even more jobs to the area and further drive economic development.

Musk’s move to Austin has also put the city on the map as an up-and-coming tech hub. Large companies like Apple and Oracle have already established offices in the area and more are likely to follow. This has attracted tech-savvy professionals from all over the world to the area, further building up Austin’s tech industry.
