Elon Musk is an inspirational business tycoon, who leads some of the most innovative companies of the modern era. He was born in South Africa, in 1971 and by the age of twelve, he’d already gained an affinity for computers. By his twenties, he was a Silicon Valley success story, launching and selling startups and their related technology to companies, such as Microsoft and AOL. His successful career of shrewd investments and business deals requires a closer examination of his initial wealth and where that wealth came from.

To find the answer, one must consider that Elon Musk was born in a very privileged family. His father was a wealthy engineer and businessman already, so it’s clear that Musk had access to money. His parents were also very supportive of his interests in business and technology from the get-go. They not only supported the idea that their son would study economics and business, but also gave him access to their resources. That access gave Musk an advantage in the business world that many of his peers did not have.

Musk did not use only his parent’s resources but he certainly used them to his advantage. He attended the University of Pennsylvania, taking a double major in economics and physics, and then went on to Stanford University to obtain a postgraduate degree in energy physics. During this education, Musk continued to grow his personal wealth by investing in a number of internet startups. He was also able to use the educational resources and knowledge he gained to develop technology, which then earned him substantial profits.

Musk’s investments enabled him to create a diverse portfolio of companies and startups. He invested in The Boring Company, PayPal, Tesla Motors and SpaceX, to name a few. His investments over time gave him the potential to acquire additional capital by taking these companies public. When these companies were taken public, Musk was able to take his profits and reinvest in other startups, effectively amplifying his profits.
