Early Days

Elon Musk is a South African-born American entrepreneur and businessman who became famous for co-founding and leading Tesla Motors, SpaceX, SolarCity and Zip2. He was part of the start-up scene in Silicon Valley in the late 90’s, when the personal computer and internet revolution began to take shape. Musk founded and invested in several internet companies, including X.com, which later became PayPal.

Musk’s early career was marked by entrepreneurial ventures, from which he gleaned valuable insights that would later inform his approach to business. After selling PayPal, Musk had enough money to pursue his personal projects, which included space exploration and artificial intelligence.

Though he didn’t invent any software on his own, Musk had an important role in the development of patent-able software programs in his investments. As an early investor in Tesla, Musk used his programmer expertise to help the company develop its software platform, aiding in the development of the company’s now famous Autopilot software.

Musk also had a role in developing Zip2’s main software, which was responsible for handling the payments of the online directory service. Zip2’s software was essential for creating the eBay website, as it allowed for users to search for listings and purchase products. Furthermore, Musk provided financial resources for the development of X.com’s money transfer platform.
