From a young age, Elon Musk, CEO and founder of Tesla Motors, SpaceX, and other companies, displayed an intense interest in technology and a penchant to be an entrepreneur. He had an incredible drive and patience that enabled him to take calculated risks, invent groundbreaking products, and reimagine transportation and exploration. But exactly what motivated him to become an entrepreneur, and what continues to fuel his passion?

Musk was born in South Africa to a father that was an engineer, and a mother who was a model and nutritionist. He experienced a difficult childhood; his parents divorced when he was 9, and he was frequently bullied while attending school. These early struggles sparked a desire to learn and ambition to succeed, as Musk focused his energy on his studies. He began exploring computer programming, eventually becoming proficient in many computer languages. As a teenager, Musk was determined to go beyond his South African roots, determined to pursue a higher level of education. Musk’s parents wanted him to pursue medical school, but he instead chose to attend the prestigious University of Pennsylvania.

At Penn, Musk applied his disciplined approach to learning, honing his skills in computer engineering, physics, and economics. While at Penn, Musk also began his own business, an online city guide called Zip2. This early venture demonstrated that Musk had the courage and entrepreneurial know-how to build a business. With support from his brother, Kimbal, Zip2 quickly grew and was eventually sold to Compaq for over $300 million dollars. This transactionprovided the capital and business acumen that Elon Musk needed to launch SpaceX and Tesla.

In a 2013 interview, Elon Musk discussed his motivation to become an entrepreneur, stating that since childhood, he was always looking for ways to improve the world. He believes “If something is important enough, even if the odds are against you, you should still do it.” He sayshis goal is to “…create highly advanced technology that everyday people can actually use and access on a daily basis.”
