Google CEO Sundar Pichai’s decision to leave India as an immigrant in the 1970s was likely based on a number of factors, including the opportunities available to him in the United States.

Pichai’s parents were university professors in India, and he has said that they instilled in him a love of learning. After attending the Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur, one of the country’s top engineering schools, Pichai won a scholarship to Stanford University.

Pichai has said that he would not have had the same opportunities in India. “I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for America,” he told the website Recode in 2016.

Pichai’s experience is not unique. A number of other successful Indian immigrants, including Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Adobe Systems CEO Shantanu Narayen, have also chosen to leave India for the United States.
