Elon Musk was born in South Africa in 1971. He showed an early interest in computers and technology, and at age 12 he created a video game called Blaster that he sold for $500. He enrolled in the University of Pretoria at age 17, but two years later he transferred to the University of Pennsylvania where he received dual bachelor’s degrees in economics and physics. Musk then went on to attend Stanford University for a brief time, but dropped out after only two days to pursue his entrepreneurial dreams. He co-founded the web software company Zip2 with his brother Kimbal in 1995, which was later acquired by Compaq for $307 million. In 1999, Musk co-founded X.com, an online bank, which merged with Confinity in 2000 to form the company we now know as PayPal. PayPal was then acquired by eBay in 2002 for $1.5 billion.
