Early Life
Elon Musk is a South African-born, Canadian-American entrepreneur, inventor, and investor. Born on June 28th, 1971, he grew up in an entrepreneurial and technologically advanced family. His father, Errol Musk, was an engineer and his mother, Maye Musk, was a model and dietitian. As a child, Elon was highly intelligent and creative, and showed an early interest in computers, business and engineering.
At the age of 12, Musk taught himself how to program, and at the age of 17, he had already sold his first computer game – a Space Invaders knock-off called ‘Blastar’. In 1995, during his time at college, Musk co-founded the web software company Zip2 with his brother Kimbal. Zip2 was later sold to Compaq for $340 million, of which Musk received $22 million. After graduating from Penn with a bachelor’s degree in economics and physics, Musk moved to California in order to pursue his interests in space exploration and technology.
While in California, Musk founded a series of other companies, including the online payment company X.com which later merged with PayPal and cost him $165 million in stock options. Musk then formed another space exploration project, SpaceX and in 2008, the first successful launch of their Falcon 1 rocket made history.
In 2004, Musk and a number of other investors formed what is now called Tesla Motors. This company was established with the aim of creating an all-electric sports car, and it was widely credited as being one of the first truly successful electric vehicle companies in the world.
