Waking Up Early
Elon Musk wakes up early, which is no surprise, given his tendency to multitask and work through the day. That said, it’s quite likely that he could be off to a later start on some days, too. Woken up with a cup of coffee, a glass of orange juice and answering emails and texts right away, he is a very productive morning person.
Musk works hard – his company SpaceX, for example, is leading the way in launching satellites, spacecrafts and humans on missions to space. He also runs Tesla Motors, the electric car company, and the near future of battery storage and the SolarCity solar energy business.
A Typical Routine
To keep everything running optimally, Musk starts his day with taking calls with members of his leadership teams, reviewing financial reports, approving contracts and updating the project schedules. After that, he spends time checking in with each of his companies and team members to see where they are in the process and offer support, ideas and help.
Additionally, Musk also takes some time to think about the bigger picture, involving innovation and the future. He envisions an electric car future where transportation is powered by clean, renewable energy.
Around Noon
At around noon Musk usually has meetings, whether in person or via video call, to further discuss his visions and help bring them to life. As an experienced entrepreneur Musk is known for his astounding vision for the future and the fact that he is willing and able to take risks and put his money where his mouth is. He regularly challenges newly introduced challenges and rivals group’s plans to drive a new space race.
He also challenges himself. Creating something that’s thought impossible, stretching boundaries and surpassing limits. It doesn’t matter how hard or unthinkable something may be, he’ll push as far as he can to make it happen.
Me Time
In the afternoons, Musk likes to engage in his favorite pastimes, which include playing video games, reading, researching, and buying bitcoin when its price tumbles. He’s an enthusiastic gamer — and a fanatic of the science-fiction game Freelancer, which is set in space and in which the player builds their own starship.
For Musk, playing video game games is a way to virtually experience a different life, and better understand the possibilities for the future. His reading lists often contain works from Elon’s favorite authors such as Arthur C. Clarke, Isaac Asimov, Ray Bradbury and Bill Gibson.
Evening Chores
Musk exercises in the evening, and then makes sure his home is clean. He is a firm believer in making the most of what one has, so he’s careful to practice this in his own home.
He makes sure to keep everyone organized, doing his best to keep things in order and to spend time with his children and family. This also includes spending some time with his current wife: Canadian musician Grimes, with whom he shares projects, business ventures and ideas.
The Night Shift
Elon often works late into the night, as he seems to have a special kinship with the night. He’s been known to take calls from his peers, colleagues and co-workers at all hours of the night — and on more than one occasion, Musk has offered solutions for problems that seemed perplexing to his team members during the day.
He also still researches on the newest innovative technologies and spends time playing one of the most renowned space exploration games.
Staying Up Late
It’s not surprising that Musk stays up late working. Whether it’s to think of solutions, to find answers or to plan his next move; he’s a real “big picture” kind of person, and his drive and ambition never let up.
That said, we can take note of a few lessons to be learnt here because, despite his tough schedule, Musk still takes the time to pause and consider the bigger picture. He understands that taking regular breaks, finding balance between work and personal life, can lead to better results – something that we all should incorporate into our own daily routines.
Pursuing Projects
On some days, Elon Musk goes even further with his passion for innovation and space exploration. He works directly on projects for SpaceX, who recently launched its first crew to space and is currently developing a new beast of a rocket – Starship, and new electric cars for Tesla.
His passion for innovation is also seen through his funding of The Boring Company. Through this, Musk intends to develop a conceptual transport system that would involve tunneling underground and moving people and goods between areas at extremely high speeds.
Wrapping Up
As the day winds down, he often continues working, even when later in the afternoon, since Elon Musk often has knowledge that he needs to take care of and bring to life.
At any given time, he also has a lot of books and magazines lying around to motivate him and keep him inspired. He also believes that getting enough sleep is important and consequently, he never stays up late because he needs to be up early to start the next day.
