The topic has attracted public interest since they first confirmed their relationship, with Musk facing intense scrutiny due to the differences in their backgrounds and age difference. There is no statistical evidence to support this exact claim, however, there is evidence to suggest that motives of individuals may play an effect on society’s perception of couple dynamics.

An analysis of 600 celebrity couples published in 2018 in the European Journal of Social Psychology found that the concept of economic status, often referred to as “money-washing”, of powerful men and young, beautiful women affects media coverage of relationships and often results in more criticism than if the couples were more “equal”. The idea of Amber Heard and Elon Musk’s relationships demonstrates a concept often under emphasized, challenging traditionally gender normative ideals of relationship dynamics. Despite the 22 year age difference between the couple and their strongly established professional statuses, their relationship has seemingly defied the odds, proving that relationships between two individuals don’t necessarily have to follow traditional gender roles or fit into socially accepted definitions of success. Rather, they can be formed first and foremost on mutual respect, love and understanding.
The public’s curiosity in their relationship is likely due to the fact that they defy all the stereotypes — they aren’t two individuals with the same background or worldview, they aren’t two young individuals that follow traditional relationships norms, and this raises questions to the public of what a “successful” or “healthy” relationship looks like.
