Early Academic Performance
Elon Musk had a difficult childhood in South Africa. His parents divorced when he was only 9 and from an early age, he found school difficult. Despite this, he was an incredibly intelligent child. He was admitted to the University of Pretoria at the age of 12 and finished his secondary education two years later, with top grades in every subject.
When Musk moved to Canada, he enrolled at Queen’s University in Ontario. He gravitated towards a double major of economics and Physics. Musk soon found these subjects to be far too easy and decided to focus on the more challenging subjects of Math and Physics.
Inventions and Experiments
During his time at Queen’s University, Musk’s already prodigious intellect was further fuelled by an intense curiosity in the sciences. He educated himself on a variety of technical topics, largely through experimentation and tinkering. Among his creations during this period was a powerful computer program used to predict the behavior of liquid rocket engines.
Musk was equally adept at applying his theoretical knowledge to real life problems. During his freshman year, he and a few of his friends designed and built a small submersible vehicle to explore underwater caves in nearby Michigan. Musk was responsible for the design of the vehicle’s electronic systems.
Victoria University of Wellington
Musk’s growing interest in advanced science eventually led him to pursue a Ph.D. in energy physics at Victoria University of Wellington. He was considered an excellent student by his professors and quickly gained recognition within the physics department.
Inorder to accomodate the demands of his studies, Musk dropped out of Queen’s University and began to divide his time between Victoria University of Wellington and Silicon Valley, where he began to develop his reputation as a technology entrepreneur.
Drop Out to Pursue Entrepreneurship
Rather than complete his studies, Musk chose to move to Silicon Valley and pursue his newfound interest in entrepreneurship. He wanted to make a name for himself as a tech guru and begin to use his knowledge to create innovative and disruptive products.
It wasn’t long before Musk gained attention for the tech start-ups he was involved in. Zip2, his first venture, was sold to Compaq Computer in 1999 and netted him $22 million. This was followed quickly by X.com, which later merged with PayPal and made him a billionaire.
Return to Education
Though he had made a name for himself in the world of technology, Musk continued to maintain his interest in the sciences. After selling off some of his businesses, he returned to the field and went back to university.
He received a Ph.D. in energy physics from the University of Sussex in 2004, and later a PhD in material science and energy engineering from Stanford University in 2008. Though his studies were, of course, incredibly pertinent to his future ventures, Musk also enjoyed learning for its own sake.
Achievements and Honors
In addition to becoming a successful entrepreneur, Musk has also achieved many academic accolades. He was the recipient of the Murray Memorial scholarship, a prestigious award given to those who have shown exceptional academic or leadership potential.
Musk was inducted into the National Academy of Engineering in 2011, and the following year was nominated to be a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering for his contributions in the field of stem cell research.
The Expansion of Elon’s Business
As Musk’s success in entrepreneurship grew, he began to expand into more and more industries. He started SpaceX and Tesla Motors, both of which have been game-changers in their respective fields.
