Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, Inc., and SpaceX, is a popular figure in the tech world. With his diverse range of achievements, it is no surprise that Musk has taken on yet another job: fatherhood. In fact, Musk has five children: three in a long term relationship, one from a previous marriage, and one adopted.
The first two children, twins Griffin and Xavier, were born to Musk and his first wife, author Justine Wilson in 2004. The following year, the couple had an additional son, Damian. The pair split in 2008, with Musk granted sole legal custody of the three boys.
The following year, after an on-again, off-again relationship with British actress Talulah Riley, Musk married her in 2010 and they welcomed their first child together, a son named Idaho, in 2014. They divorced in 2016 and Musk gained full custody of Idaho.
In 2018, Musk’s life changed yet again with the arrival of little X Æ A-12. X Æ A-12 is Musk’s fifth child and was adopted from Mexico by musician Grimes and Musk. At the time of adoption, X Æ A-12 was only 6 weeks old. Ina little over two years, Musk’s family had gone from being four to five.

Elon Musk takes parenting seriously with multiple nannies to help out with the household duties and childcare. He even goes so far as monitoring the children’s task progress daily and trying to instill a learning mentality in them. He also shows his sons how to make inventions and experiments without burdening them with pressure or expectations.
Musk’s five children have very different personalities and interests, and the businessman pays careful attention to nurture the different traits in each one of them. For example, his eldest son, Griffin, was very apprehensive in school, but showed a keen interest in robotics, a hobby that Musk encouraged him to pursue and that has been beneficial for him.
Musk seems to be a very dedicated parent, attempting to balance family and work, but it is difficult to maintain the balance, saying “For example, I work late at night a lot, and the kids may get angry about that… They’ll understand someday.”

He also finds time for occasional trips and family day outs. In an interview, Musk said that he “remains focused all the time” and that being a father has allowed him “to be a part of the sot of joy and strangeness of life”.

Grimes, X Æ A-12’s adoptive mom, is a strong presence in Elon’s life and has a close bond with all of her step-children. She also has an activist mind and is an advocate for technology, so it´s easy to guess why Elon picked her for a life and business partner.
Elon credits his success to his children and his wife, saying, “ All of my children inspire me, and my wife too. They’re my lifeboat in the sea of life.”
The Origin of X Æ A-12’s Name
From the moment Elon and Grimes welcomed their adopted son X Æ A-12, the name has been a source of curiosity and confusion. Musk used Twitter to try to explain the origin of the name saying “X, the unknown variable. Æ, my elven spelling of Ai (love &/or Artificial intelligence). A-12 = precursor to SR-17 (our favorite aircraft). No weapons, no defenses, just speed. Great in battle, but non-violent.”
Grimes clarified the name even further saying “ASCII art of an angel. A=Archangel. 12 is my favorite number & is a reference to the song ‘A-12′ by Grimes.”The couple even registered the name legally in California, filing the documents to change his legal name from “Baby X” to “X Æ A-12 Musk.”
The unusual name has generated debate around the world, mostly around the legalities when it comes to registering an uncommon name. However, the parents have stood firm and have kept the name X Æ A-12 since the birth of their son.
Legal Custody of his Five Children
Elon Musk has been granted sole legal custody of his five children, a matter which provoked controversy and plenty of conversations. The reason for it is that Musk has long been a proponent of the idea of a universal basic income, which would provide financial aid to all citizens. This could affect his kids in the long term, as this form of income could reduce their inheritance.
But Musk has made it clear that his main objective is to give his children the opportunities to live full and successful lives.
