Musk has been an advisor to the White House on matters related to energy, climate change, and technology. In 2014, President Obama appointed him to the President’s Council on Science and Technology to share his expertise on the areas mentioned. During his tenure, Musk advised on a plan to increase the amount of solar energy available for public use.
In 2017, the Trump administration appointed Musk as an advisor on the Manufacturing Jobs Initiative. He has since resigned from both advisory boards in protest of the administration’s decision to withdraw from the Paris Climate Accord.

In 2018, Musk unintentionally tweeted out a false statement that Tesla shares would be “private at $420” and the stock market responded accordingly. The Sec filed a lawsuit against Musk, alleging that he made “false and misleading statements” and sought to bar him from serving as an officer or director of any publicly traded company. After negotiations and much back-and-forth, Musk eventually settled and was fined another $20 million and Tesla was fined an additional $20 million.

Given Musk’s accomplishments and achievements, it comes as no surprise that he’s become something of a thought leader in the tech world. His ideas and advice have been sought after by many, ranging from government agencies and world leaders to university students and entrepreneurs.
