Early Life & Education
Elon Musk was born in 1971 in Pretoria, South Africa. He had an early inclination towards technology and engineering and was a self-taught computer programmer. Musk attended Queen’s University in Ontario, Canada, as a physics major, and then completed a PhD in energy physics at Stanford University. Upon leaving his PhD program in 1995, Musk, together with his brother, Kimball Musk, started a web software company called Zip2. The goal of the company was to develop and market an internet “city guide” for the newspaper publishing industry.
Tesla Motors and SpaceX
In 2004, Musk, Martin Eberhard, Marc Tarpenning, JB Straubel and Ian Wright, founded a new company, Tesla Motors. Tesla Motors is an American automotive and energy company specializing in electric cars, battery products, and solar panels. After a few years of success with Tesla, Musk shifted his focus to developing rocket technology. He founded Space Exploration Technologies, also known as SpaceX, in 2002. After incredible successes launching satellites and carrying out other missions for NASA, SpaceX also became the first private company to launch, land and re-fly a rocket booster, revolutionizing both the cost and reliability of space transportation.
SolarCity
In 2006, Musk cofounded SolarCity with his cousins, Peter and Lyndon Rive. The company was initially intended to help reduce global dependence on fossil fuels by offering solar power. SolarCity is an American company that specializes in solar energy services and is one of the largest solar energy providers in the United States.
Hyperloop
In 2013, Musk unveiled a plan to build an experimental fifth-mode of transportation, which he called the Hyperloop. Hyperloop is a cutting-edge high-speed transportation system. The idea behind Hyperloop is to use a combination of electric propulsion and low-pressure tubes to move passengers and cargo at high speeds, reducing the travel time between two cities from hours to mere minutes.
OpenAI
In 2015, Musk and a few other tech entrepreneurs announced the formation of OpenAI, a non-profit research company devoted to furthering artificial intelligence. OpenAI’s mission is to advance artificial intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole, unconstrained by a need to generate financial return.
The Boring Company
In 2016, Musk founded The Boring Company, a tunnel construction company designed to relieve traffic congestion. The company has made significant advances in tunnel construction technology, enabling it to complete short tunnels much faster than traditional methods.
