In 2003, Musk founded Tesla Motors with the intention of producing electric cars to rival the gasoline-powered variety. He did this for a twofold reason: to reduce greenhouse emission from cars and to make electric cars cost comparable to traditional cars. In 2006, Tesla Motors released their first car, the Tesla Roadster, becoming the world’s first production electric car.
Tesla quickly revolutionized the auto industry, becoming the first mass-market electric vehicle. They have continued to redefine the auto industry, with the Tesla Model 3 being the most popular electric vehicle in the world today.
Investing in Space Exploration
In 2002, Musk founded his own aerospace company, SpaceX, to do something no company had done before – send a spacecraft to the International Space Station with astronauts onboard. After years of research and development, SpaceX successfully launched and docked with the space station in 2012.
SpaceX achieved a series of milestones over the years such as the first commercial spacecraft to dock with the ISS, the first reusable rocket, the first successful Falcon Heavy launch, the first crewed Falcon 9 launches, and much more. In 2016, Musk founded The Boring Company, a tunneling transportation firm. By 2022, Musk wants to create a network of tunnels to quickly transport cars and goods beneath cities. This proposed system is designed to reduce traffic congestion. The Boring Company is also looking to make tunneling faster, more affordable, and more efficient by eliminating traditional excavation processes.
In addition, Musk revealed the Solar Roof V3, a roof shingle integrated with photovoltaic cells, in August 2019. This product is a game-changer, allowing homes to generate solar power while remaining aesthetically pleasing. This product is designed to reduce electricity costs and promote sustainable solutions.
Making Good on His Promises
In 2006, Musk made the bold promise to send a crewed mission to Mars by the year 2019. Despite the seemingly insurmountable odds and criticisms, Musk forged ahead and is currently working with SpaceX to make human space travel and permanent settlement of Mars a reality. Some of the programs that are being worked on include the SpaceX Starship, a nine-meter-diameter reusable launch vehicle, and the Super Heavy Boosters, giant rockets that are powered by SpaceX’s Raptor engine.

In October 2016, Musk announced Tesla Autopilot, the world’s first fully integrated self-driving system. Tesla Autopilot uses cameras, radar, and ultrasonic sensors to detect objects and move the car automatically. In 2015, Musk founded Neuralink, a San Francisco-based startup dedicated to linking the human brain with computers. Neuralink is currently working on a brain-computer interface, or BCI, in hopes of creating a neural-link with computers.
