Early Life
Born in White Plains, NY May 14th, 1984, Mark Zuckerberg’s beginnings were humble. His father, a dentist and his mother, a psychiatrist, raised him with his three sisters. Though he attended private school, they instilled values of hard work and dedication in young Mark.
Zuckerberg’s mother taught him basic Latin and the family attended services at a local synagogue. Through his mother, he was introduced to classical music and literature and eventually graduated from Ardsley High School in 2002. It was during this time he had begun to write software, so he was ready for a challenge.
Mark then enrolled in Harvard and in his sophomore year he created what is now called “The Facebook”. Little did he know that soon after, he’d become a student hotshot for having created something revolutionary.
The Facebook
In his dorm in February 2004, he created a website called “The Facebook”. It was designed as a way to discover and connect with people at Harvard. Before long, a few other universities and colleges had adopted it. Zuckerberg then dropped out of Harvard and even moved to California in order to pursue his vision.
The success of “The Facebook”, was fueled in part by increasing amounts of venture funding, which eventually allowed it to be renamed to the more familiar “Facebook”. From the opportunity arose a new age of social media, one that allowed anyone in the world with access to the internet to connect with anyone else. Facebook has become the number one social networking site in the world.
Motivation
Though many see him as a tech mogul, Zuckerberg’s motivation was never money. Instead, his focus has always been on connecting people in ways that weren’t possible before. He has long said that his goal is to give the world the ability to share what they are thinking and feeling, and to connect with others in meaningful ways.
One of the main ideas behind Facebook is the notion of making the world more open and connected. The user-friendly interface and features make the site incredibly popular and this popularity has translated into good profits for Zuckerberg.
Philanthropy
In 2010, Zuckerberg and his wife founded the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative. The charity is dedicated to advancing human potential and promoting equal opportunity by investing in education, public health, scientific research, criminal justice reform and more.Together, the Zuckerbergs have donated more than $3.3 billion to their organization.
In addition to the Initiative, Zuckerberg has donated hundreds of millions of dollars to other charities and to medical research, most notably the fight against Ebola. Zuckerberg is an advocate of open access to information and education and has been an inspiration to many young entrepreneurs.
Recognition
Mark Zuckerberg has received several awards and recognitions including the TIME 100 Most Influential Person in the World and being included in Fortune Magazine’s list of the “World’s Most Powerful People” four times. Criticisms
